Successful Showcase!

Have you had a chance to listen to the live recordings from the Rear View Music Band showcase 2012? If not, then get yourselves down to our wedding band site, at www.edinburghfunctionband.co.uk.

This showcase has been deemed a great success, with not only all the people that came to scope out the band, booking Rear View, but one of the promoters even booked the band for her own wedding!

Who do you think has the best singing method?

Do you remember Lene Nystrom, the singer from poptastic eurodance band, "Aqua"? We couldn't call them a one hit wonder by any means, they had a number of hits in the early noughties, and they definitely tapped into the pop music market. However, the hit "Barbie Girl", demonstrates an undesirable singing technique.

For this, we would encourage you to think about your soft palate, the soft membrane between your oral cavity and your nasal cavity. In our singing lessons in Edinburgh, we like to make sure that our students use this, correctly. If you're looking for the best singing method, would you choose, baby talking Lene, or rich, velvet sounding, Cher?

This is not to say that Cher is 1--% perfect, her single, "Believe", is rumoured to be an example of auto-tune gone wrong. However, in "If I could Turn Back Time", we hear the wonderful tones in her voice, a bit like listening to audible chocolate fudge cake!

Using the soft palate correctly, is one of the key ingredients of using the best singing method, practiced in our Edinburgh singing lessons. It is not the only thing that we would want you to think about, but it certainly helps!

The next time you're doing your scales, have a think about where your soft palate is, and have a think about whether it is working for you, or against you!

It's so easy to allow your stresses to spiral out of control and leave you confused, disorientated and unable to handle simple tasks. What's that got to do with singing?

Well, not only is music a well documented stress reliever, but relaxing into your singing will only make your singing voice stronger and more effective. Taking a deep breath is something that is often said to people to give them a moment to calm down from a stressful day, but how often do you need it for singing? Well the truth is, if you're not practicing your breathing techniques, you're doing yourself and your voice an injustice.

We encourage all our singers, during their singing lessons in Edinburgh to use time wisely and to remember to be calm and present. See how a singing lesson or practice can benefit your health!

How many different ways can you interpret this?

It's so true though. If you always stick to the same things, you're always going to get the same results that you've always got, so this weeks challenge for singers, is to think outside your comfort zone!!! For your next singing lesson, you should try something new!

If you have a tendency to sing ballads, then why not try a rock song? If you always go with Musical Theatre, try some Jazz? If you always go Hard Rock, listen to cheesy boy pop... oh yes I went there! You will undoubtedly find something new in your voice by doing this. You see, it's not just about picking different songs from the same genre, or indeed, picking songs you like, sometimes a great practice can come from singing something that you'd never consider even listening too.

There are so many ways that you can get the best out of your voice, but one thing is for sure, trying something new will always teach you something fabulous about you!

It's been a mega month of recording for JamieT, and it's not over yet! This coming week we have a series of mixing, mastering and more recording! Keep your eyes and ears peeled for news on church organ recordings!!!

We Ate Them Off The Floor recording is finished, mixed and mastered and we'll be adding info on that one shortly!

The showcase yesterday was fantastic, and a big thank you to everyone who came, we enjoyed ourselves immensely and it seems you did too! We are proud to be the chosen wedding band for the guests that came.

We had some Rolling in the Deep, to Sweet Home Alabama. We were Walking on Sunshine, but we had our Superstition... most of all, we were proud to say "Let Me Entertain You"!

We have had wonderful feedback so far, there are now pictures to see on the function band page, and we hope to have a video to show you shortly. Keep your eyes peeled because we may give you a "behind the scenes" glimpse of Edinburgh's finest party band very soon.

Who is your favourite singer?

It’s a question that we all ask our friends, ourselves and is a reason that we sometimes watch, with baited breath, musical award shows, looking to find out who the industry deems worth of the “best singer” accolade. Sometimes we agree and sometimes we find it downright insulting.

Being able to justify your choice, certainly goes some way towards giving it credibility, and is sometimes something that the “industry” forgets to do.

We’re going to talk about one singer who has a voice that stands alone in the industry. The one failing, she often fails to pick songs that match her incredible talent, but when she does, it’s a guaranteed pop hit!

Christina Aguilera was always compared to Britney Spears during her formative years in music. They both came from a Disney Club background and both of similar age. However, Christina has always proved herself to be a far superior singer.

You can pick many a live recording of Christina and see how she manages to use her body to fully commit to the song. You can find an example of this on Youtube when she sings, one of her greatest influences, Etta James’ song “At Last”. When she gets to the end, she takes her time, she prepares and then she prepares her body for the song as she bursts into a melodic detonation of singing magic! This is undoubtedly rehearsed, but magnificently effective in presenting the very best that Christina is capable of.

A singer, very worthy of the title “one of the greatest”!
